SGOT : Serum Glutonic Oxaloacetic Transaminase

Medical

What is the full form of SGOT?

SGOT stands for "Serum Glutonic Oxaloacetic Transaminase"

What is SGOT (Serum Glutonic Oxaloacetic Transaminase)?

SGOT is also known as aspartate aminotransferase (AST). This is a type of enzyme that is found in the liver and heart cells of the body. SGOT enzyme is released into the body only when the liver of the heart is damaged due to some reason.

After the enzyme is released into the body, it tends to amplify the SGOT levels in the blood. This indicates that the body might be suffering from viral hepatitis if the liver is damaged or it could also indicate a silent heart attack if the heart is damaged.

In most less common scenarios, the level of SGOT is also amplified due to some of the medication course. Either way, this condition is serious and needs to be checked when comes to notice. Both conditions serve a different set of medication courses.
