EEG stands for "Electroencephalogram".

What is EEG (Electroencephalogram)?

This is a type of test that is designed to detect any electrical activity that is taking place in the patient’s brain. The means by which this process is carried forward is when metallic plates (discs) which act as negative and positive electrodes are connected to the scalp.

The brain already communicates by generating electrical impulses (signals) through the body. The signal is sent by the brain then it is received by that specific part of the body and then again the signal is sent back to the brain. Every simple or tedious task is done through this mechanism, no matter if the person is sleeping.

After putting the plates, then through EEG, the result is recorded. The result is put forward in the form of wavy lines. This test is done in order to figure out a few but major important details, such as it is done to find out if the person is suffering from epilepsy. Hence, the technique EEG is used to find out the disorders related to brain functions of a human.

Many kinds of brain disorders are figured out by the means of analyzing the result on the EEG. It is done to treat disorders like:

• Brain tumor
• Brain damage from a head injury
• Brain dysfunction can have a variety of causes (encephalopathy)
• Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis)
• Stroke
• Sleep disorders

It is also done to confirm if the patient is brain dead after going into a state of coma. It is also done during the procedure that involves the use of anesthesia by calculating the brain activity of the patient.
