Samsung Electronics mass-produces the world's first 12nm-class DRAM

According to South Korea's "Korea Economics" report on May 18, Samsung Electronics said on the 18th that its 16 gigabit (Gb) DDR5 DRAM using the industry's most advanced 12-nanometer (nm) process technology has begun mass production, once again proving its Leadership in cutting-edge DRAM technology. The semiconductor industry believes that Samsung Electronics has demonstrated its determination to break through the semiconductor recession with its "ultra-large gap" technology.

Compared with 14nm-class DRAM, Samsung Electronics' new 12nm-class DDR5 DRAM can reduce power consumption by about 23%, increase wafer production capacity by about 20%, and support speeds of up to 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), equivalent to It can process two 30GB ultra-high-definition movies per second. Excellent energy efficiency performance makes it an ideal solution for global IT companies that want to save energy and reduce emissions.

Samsung Electronics completed the DDR5 DRAM compatibility evaluation with AMD in December last year, and will continue to expand the production line to meet the needs of customers using data centers, artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators, and high-performance computing (HPC) technologies. It is expected that server suppliers such as Dell and HP will increase their purchases of DDR5 in order to improve product performance.

At present, the global market is dominated by the previous generation product DDR4. According to the data of Omdia, a market research company, DDR4 accounts for 36% of the entire memory market this year, while DDR5 accounts for 12%. It has been observed that as the world pays more and more attention to "generative artificial intelligence" technologies such as ChatGPT, the demand for high-performance, low-power DDR5 D-RAM will grow faster than expected.
