Infineon uses recyclable printed circuit boards from Jiva Materials

【Lansheng Technology Information】In order to reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainable development is the key to achieving climate goals and improving environmental protection, Infineon Technologies AG has launched a recyclable, biodegradable fiber based on natural fibers and halogen-free polymers Soluboard®, the leading printed circuit board (PCB) substrate, takes another important step towards a greener future.

The plant-based PCB substrate used by Soluboard is made of natural fibers and has a much lower carbon footprint than traditional fiberglass. The organic structure is encapsulated in a non-toxic polymer that dissolves when immersed in hot water, leaving only compostable organic material. Not only does this eliminate PCB waste, the electronic components soldered onto the board can also be recycled and reused. By using Soluboard for its demonstration and evaluation boards, Infineon is making another important contribution to sustainable design testing in the electronics industry.

Andreas Kopp, Head of Product Management Discrete Devices in the Zero Carbon Industrial Power Division of Infineon Technologies, said: "For the first time, recyclable, biodegradable PCB materials are being used in the design of electronics for consumer and industrial applications. Milestone. We are also actively researching end-of-life reusability of discrete power devices, another important step in driving a circular economy in the electronics industry."

Infineon has already produced three different demonstration boards using Soluboard technology and plans to expand its offering over the next few years. More than 500 demonstration boards are currently in use to showcase the company's portfolio of discrete power devices, including a dedicated board for refrigerator applications. Based on the results of ongoing stress tests, Infineon plans to provide guidance on how to recycle and reuse power semiconductors removed from Soluboards, which will significantly extend the service life of electronic components.

The research will also help Infineon gain a fundamental understanding of the design and reliability challenges customers face when using new materials in core applications. It is worth mentioning that as it contributes to the development of sustainable design, customers will also benefit from it.
